Pilot Bay
Pilot Bay is a sheltered bay at the base of Mount Maunganui, famous for its calm swimming and fishing conditions. It features a popular grass reserve under mature trees with a boardwalk, public toilets and roadside parking.
It serves as a busy hub for the Port of Tauranga, which is located at the southern end of the bay, with Mauao at the northern end, creating a sheltered and safe inner harbour beach.

Mauao (Mount Maunganui)
Mauao, also known as Mount Maunganui, is a sacred ancestral mountain and a prominent landmark marking the entrance to Tauranga Harbour.
The name Mauao translates to “caught by the dawn,” a reference to a legend about a lovelorn mountain caught in the first light of day while being dragged to the sea by magical creatures.
It is a significant cultural site for the Tauranga Moana iwi and a popular outdoor space, with many walking tracks providing elevated views of the surrounding landscape.
